Cuts and Conversations: How a Visit to the Barbers Could Break the Stigma around Men’s Mental Health

21-Jul-2021

In the midst of the mumbled hum of car enthusiasts chatter as they enter the Silverstone arena, the rumble of Formula One car engines in the pit stop below us and the screech of tyres against the tarmac on the race course: the Gould Barbers team were setting up in The Paddock Club for an unconventional weekend of haircuts at the most unique pop-up location for a barbers shop we've witnessed so far. For us, the anticipation of Silverstone below us served as the backdrop to the important cause at the forefront of our minds. Whilst barbering is always an important part of our everyday, today we had one clear statement: Men’s mental health matters.

Partnering with Movember, whilst promoting Cuts and Conversations, (and of course our barbers are certainly experts in both of those fields…) we set up shop in The Paddock Club - a comfortable air conditioned lounge above the course. The weekend was filled with new customers looking for race-ready hair cuts, and conversations in anticipation of the events of the Grand Prix - as well as some interesting more well-known visitors, such as the likes of champion jockeys Frankie Dettori and Oisin Murphy, who thought they could take on the task of being a Gould Barber for the day… (see our Instagram story highlights for the evidence!) We also met briefly with BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing champion Oti Mabuse, Qatari Sheikh Fahad bin Abdullah Al-Thani and musician AJ Tracey - whilst also sighting Tom Cruise at the end of the weekend.

Our weekend at Silverstone partnering with Movember has highlighted the on-going stigma surrounding men’s masculinity and mental health. We want to remind you, it’s okay not to be okay, and talking honestly and openly about how you are feeling can be life changing. Talking to your barber can make the world of difference. So, whether you’re popping in for a skin fade or short back and sides, our barbers love to talk about what’s going on in your world. We want to have great conversations in all of our barber shops whilst you’re having your hair cut - so why not book your appointment today and let's get the conversation started.
